The second Winter Youth Olympic Games took place in Lillehammer, Norway, from February 12-21, 2016. The event brought together top athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 from over 60 nations to compete in the seven sports which were also represented at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. Senegal and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have mutually agreed to postpone the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Dakar 2022 to 2026. President Macky Sall's proposal was welcomed by IOC President Thomas Bach, following in-depth discussions on the subject. This postponement meets the requirement Lillehammer is known as a typical venue for winter sporting events; it was host city of the 1994 Winter Olympics, and the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics, and was part of a joint bid with applicant host city Oslo to host events part of the 2022 Winter Olympics until Oslo withdrew its bid on 1 October 2014.

Lillehammer is still a small, friendly town, renowned the Winter Olympics in 1994 and the 2016 Youth Olympic Games. The Olympic spirit is still going strong. The arenas are in constant use, hosting everything from World Cups to children's ski races. The Winter Youth Olympic Games are a relatively new event.
