Test that the device has no internet connectivity. Identify the network interface you want to share with the iDevice through ifconfig (ex: en1). Plug the iDevice into the Mac and figure out what network interface is created for it through ifconfig (ex: en2, simple as running the command before and after connecting the device and seeing what's new).
